the story of onion the floating cat

onion was an installation piece i put up in one of the schools common areas (with approval from the administration ofc). he was a super light plush that was lifted by several balloons and tethered to the railing of the second floor and the bars next to the windows. HE LOOKED PRETTY AWESOME IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF. i spent the next morning putting up a show in the gallery, but i made sure to check the helium was ok in the morning. he was up when i arrived at school, but when i came out to eat lunch, i realized a bunch of people were walking around with balloons and i was like, “oh balls…” I WENT TO THE COMMONS AND ONION WAS GONE. and everyone. was. pissed. in fact, i was probably the least the upset about it (due to fatigue and half expecting it, i was just confused/surprised). so for the rest of the day, the art faculty and the administration worked to find who did it and i finished putting up our show in the gallery. THEY WENT CSI ON THAT. i got to go to the office and watch the surveillance videos that showed three people cutting the tether, catching onion when he fell, cutting the balloons off his hands, and taking him. after a couple of hours, they managed to find the kidnappers (freshman from the theatre dept) and they were yelled at by several people until they cried. mr. c brought onion to the gallery where we realized they wrote on onions hand and scarf with sharpie SO THEY GOT IN EVEN MORE TROUBLE. so they got suspended until tuesday and now they have to do community service for the art dept for an implicitly long period of time. i’m too stingy and worn out to redo the balloons, so i put onion in the gallery on a pedestal and made him a crown that said “king of survivors”; i got several apologies (but not from the three freshman yet) and many people came to the show just to see him.

and it was awwwwwwwright.

and despite $21.99 and several hours of my (and other people’s) time being pretty much wasted, i’m just happy to see how the school as a whole really does care about its student’s art and i’m so glad to be there.

so float on
